Hi guys, I've been actively hitting the gym for almost a year now. Never was very motivated on this front until now. Problem I'm finding is that I'm having difficulty 1) adding muscle in certain areas and 2) losing the extra bit of fat from my stomach. I realise I need to do cardio and eat well to lose the extra gut, but I think my fat redistribution from my meds is keeping it where I don't want it (stomach) and the harder I push myself the more gaunt my face looks. Before I switched my meds about year and a half ago, I lost most of my body fat and probably muscle mass (what little I had at that point) Truth is other than around my gut I don't have any extra body fat. Anybody dealing with this problem as well, who can offer some wisdom??? I would so appreciate it.

Re: body reshaping and meds
Sun, November 19, 2006 - 8:10 AMI have the same problem, made much worse after an abdominal operation in August. Try a very simple regime - carbs for breakfast, to stimulate the metabolism; carbs and protein for lunch; protein and vegetables for dinner. No alcohol except on Saturdays, and then in moderation. No bread at all.

Sun, June 15, 2008 - 4:23 PMtell your doc to prescribe testosterone patches or gel; it's well documented that peripheral wasting is accompanied by endocrine disregulation (all hiv guys are testo deficient) and supplementing it is considered standard of care. Visceral fat is a bitch to get rid of; I've done lay-off periods entirely fat-free and that's helped a bit - as far as weight training, you really need to push it and continue adding weight and increasing difficulty. Have both short term and long term goals (this month + where do I want to be in a year.) For weight gain I recommend minimal aerobics, but bear in mind that for the sake of cardio function, you still have to do some. I run and limit myself to a half mile before lifting. As for lipo, Viramune is the worst; avoid it - there are better meds out there now. Don't forget to supplement with glutamine for less day-after soreness. Ditto on no carbs after 4. Whole grain, fresh fruit - no processed junk food. As you progress think about adding creatine or HMB. -

Sun, June 15, 2008 - 10:51 PMWell to give my 2 cents worth, fat does not make you fat , but carbohidrates that can not be processed due to insuline resistance will turn into fat. Testosterone if you need it if great otherwise is not good. If you are wasting, sometimes the testosterone help to stop the wasting.
Good nutrition means eating about every 2 to three hours foods that are wholesome, watch out for Corn SYrup and High Fructose Corn Syrup, Fresh Fruits for snacks work wonders, avoid extra fat, but remember you need fat for those fat soluble vitamins to work, olive oil, flax seed, cold water fish are great fats, Butter on moderation and definitely avoid Trans fats and satrurated fats as much as possible.
For me the best excercise routine is about 15 minutes of low impact aerobics to start the warming up, get the blood flowing and then do the weights for strength and for resistance, then you can end with a 30 minutes slow cardio.
Don't overdo, everything in excess is bad.
